Roof Cleaning FAQs
What causes black streaks on my roof?
Black streaks are caused by Gloeocapsa Magma, a type of algae that feeds on the limestone filler in asphalt shingles. It spreads quickly in humid climates like Summerville, SC and will continue to grow and damage your shingles if left untreated.
Is roof cleaning safe for my shingles?
Yes — when done correctly using the soft wash method. The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) specifically recommends low-pressure soft washing over high-pressure washing, which can strip granules and void your warranty.
How often should I clean my roof?
In the Lowcountry, most roofs need cleaning every 2–3 years due to the heat and humidity. Roofs with heavy tree coverage or north-facing slopes may need it more frequently.
Will roof cleaning void my warranty?
No — soft washing is the manufacturer-recommended cleaning method and will not void your roof warranty. High-pressure washing, however, can void warranties and damage shingles.
